Thinking around knowledge practices and on-line social networks
What are some of the emergent knowledge practices that use social software & facilitate awareness, learning, knowledge sharing and creation?
This a topic I will be exploring at OSN2005 where the good news is the early bird registration fee of $35 has been extended to February 8th.
* Social affordances - profiles, yellowpages, blogs, wiki, RSS, games, tags, networking engines
We have seen a dramatic rise in social software that helps find and establish relationships, connects people around shared interests and allows 'voicing'. Here we will tour social bookmarking, visit KmWiki and think about profiling.
* Distinctions & ontologies - enhancing group understanding, constructing & sharing meaning, building a shared language
A basic premise for knowledge sharing is that we share context. When a group has agreed on meaning, established the boundaries of their discourse and know the interests and expertise of their members, they leverage their ability to do productive work, and explore advanced topics by orders of magnitude.
* Patterns & pattern language - capturing validated experience within a community
Patterns help a community uncover connections and validate practices that work or those to avoid (anti-patterns). Having a way to synthesize, capture and talk about joint experiences in a limited domain is a powerful tool for making cognitive advances, detecting gaps and improving participants ability to practice at higher levels.
* Persistent conversations - implications and relation to personal identity
There is something fundamental about persistent conversations that we need to understand and pay attention to. This goes beyond the ability to mine and build a shared memory, it is more about writing in stone, once written and identity issues. We will be exploring the tools, practices and social issues that make 'open writing' an exciting area and an intimidating exposure for some.
* Weak ties - strategies for building a robust personal on-line network
With so many tools and genre calling for attention, where should you begin and what are the paybacks?. Here we will be gathering the essential lessons from applying social network analysis (sna) and conducting an inquiry to see what we can learn from the attention currently being paid to social networks across a wide variety of disciplines.
